A vision decades in the making continues to move closer to reality.
The S-Line passenger rail corridor, which will reconnect Raleigh and Richmond while bringing passenger rail service back to Wake Forest, represents one of the most significant transportation and economic development opportunities in the town's history. Along with the planned Downtown Mobility Hub and supporting infrastructure improvements, the project will strengthen regional connectivity while creating new opportunities for business investment, workforce mobility, tourism, and long-term economic growth. It has the potential to transform how people live, work, visit, and invest in Wake Forest, and particularly its Downtown, for generations to come.
Since the Wake Forest Business and Industry Partnership (WFBIP) last reported on the project, several significant milestones have marked continued progress. Federal funding continues to advance engineering and design of the S-Line corridor, the Downtown Mobility Hub Concept Design Study is complete, and key infrastructure improvements supporting the future rail corridor continue to move forward.
The project received another significant boost this spring when the Federal Railroad Administration released $57.9 million in federal funding for land surveying, engineering, and design of the S-Line corridor. The funding reinforces continued federal commitment to restoring passenger rail service and marks another important step toward bringing this transformational project to fruition.
Construction is underway on the Durant Road grade separation, while work continues on the Rogers Road Grade Separation project. The improvements will replace the existing at-grade railroad crossing with a bridge over the rail line, widen a remaining portion of Rogers Road to four travel lanes with a center turn lane, add sidewalks on both sides of the roadway, and reroute Heritage Branch Road to Capital Creek Drive. Together, these enhancements will improve safety, increase traffic capacity, and support future growth along one of Wake Forest's key transportation corridors. NCDOT currently anticipates construction beginning in 2027.
Perhaps the most exciting milestone over the past year has been the completion of the Downtown Wake Forest Mobility Hub Concept Design Study, providing the official comprehensive vision for how the future station area could transform Downtown Wake Forest.
While the Mobility Hub will serve as Wake Forest's passenger rail station, the vision reaches far beyond transportation. The concept envisions a vibrant gateway into Downtown that integrates passenger rail with local transit while creating opportunities for retail, office space, public gathering areas, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle connections.
More importantly, it establishes a long-term framework for redevelopment surrounding the station, creating opportunities for mixed-use development, private investment, tourism, and business growth while strengthening connections throughout the Downtown district.
As planning continues, updated estimates place the buildout of the Mobility Hub at approximately $50 million, reflecting current market conditions, construction costs, financing expenses, and inflation. NCDOT has applied for an additional $31.25 million BUILD Grant while continuing to pursue other state, regional, and federal funding opportunities to help bring the vision to life.
While the full vision will take time to realize, each milestone brings Wake Forest closer to becoming a more connected, accessible, and economically competitive community. Together, the S-Line, Downtown Mobility Hub, and related infrastructure improvements represent an investment not only in transportation, but in the town's long-term prosperity, creating opportunities for businesses, residents, visitors, and future generations.
